From
a very young age I was extremely interested in Television. It was always a running joke that if you
asked me about the characters in a TV show I could most likely tell you the
actor’s real name and some other random facts about them. Every night my Mother and I would sit on the
couch and watch our shows together. Looking back now, most of the shows I was
allowed to watch at such a young age were totally inappropriate. However, I’m thankful for my inappropriate TV
watching because it is the reason I know that I want to create TV of my own. A major role model of mine is Shonda
Rhimes. She has three hit TV shows named
Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder. These shows have some of the most diverse
casts you can find on TV. Rhimes
includes characters from the LGBT community and people of color. Also the main characters of all three of her shows are women. Rhimes doesn't just try to "fill the quota". She knows viewers want to see themselves represented in a respectful and interesting way. She creates characters for every type of person. I want to help create something that everyone
can identify with the way Shonda Rhimes does. Television is extremely influential to young people. It's what they look to for inspiration and even guidance. That's why it's so important for people to be able to find characters they can see parts of themselves in. I hope to be someone who can help with the lack of diversity on TV even if I haven't figured out in exactly what way.
